The Mental Health Review Tribunals (MHRT, Ministry of Justice) is an independent body which hears the cases of patients who appeal against a section of the Mental Health Act 1983, under which they are being compulsorily detained in hospital. As the medical member, I see the patient in private before the hearing and report my findings back to the other member of the tribunal. We then hear all the evidence and decide if the patient is legally detained or not. If not, the patient is taken off their section and made an informal patient.
